Fundamentals

As I was slowly preparing my ultimate review of allll the biohacking tools I have extensively experimented with in the last year (it’s coming!), I was hit with a realization.

Boy, have I accumulated a broad toolbox! (If you would like to know why I integrate, please check out one of my recent posts). Some of the gold nuggets found along the way of my research are truly astonishing and well… obscure.

But this is not my realization.

The EUREKA moment came when I was completing a much-enjoyed pilates class with my favorite Lia Bartha, and the class was themed “Fundamentals”. I enjoy these classes when we go back to basics so much. Also, these are extremely effective in terms of the burn.

And I couldn't help but wonder: are all of the biohacking tricks of the trade truly worth anything without the basics being strongly in place?

My firm answer is NO, they are completely redundant in the absence of foundational health pillars.

I love a good biohack, cherry on top, easy fix like every next person, but it is the fundamentals that held and supported me throughout years of recovery from all of my chronic conditions- not quick fixes, not supplements (as great as they can be short term).

And those very same ground rules are what is capable of systemically improving the lives of my patients.

What have been the most important basics for health according to my experience?

Let’s dive into it:

1)    Mental health aspect.

Clean up your relationships. Investigate your patterns. Look at your life. Do the work on yourself. Find a good therapist if need be. Choose what gives you peace and happiness. Believe in something. Cultivate being present, slowing down. Bring more joy, more connection (oxytocin is the master hormone!), and more laughter. A happy nervous system is the number one requirement to facilitate healing and resilience.

2)    Eating habits.

Fresh food is best. The fewer ingredients the better! Allow your body quality, natural foods. No single diet will agree with all so listen to your body. My skin went crazy on a gluten-free diet, for example. Turns out I don’t do well with tapioca, and it is present in most gluten-free options. Choose fresh, homemade, quality foods, as close to nature as possible and there is no need for the word ‘diet’ to exist. Don’t let the food industry ‘convenience’ health out of you.

3)    Movement.

Such a powerful prerequisite to health! The body in motion stays in motion and so the more you will move the more you will crave it. Do what you enjoy, no need for draconian punishments. It is a privilege to move. Movement aids brain health, and detox and keeps you young longer. Everything can be purchased easily these days, but not a fit, agile body. This takes work and it elevates your human experience on this planet to the next level.

4)    Lifestyle choices.

The nitty gritty that makes or breaks you. Do you prioritize sleep? Do you honor the circadian rhythm of the body? Are you minimizing chemicals and environmental pollutants in your life as best as you can? Do you get enough sunlight or are you living a zombie life?

That’s it. Each of these pillars could of course have books written about them, and they do! I’ve tried to keep it bite-sized as usual though and inspire you to take aligned action upon this overview. Nothing groundbreaking here, but don’t we all need a reminder?

Don’t we all need to slow down and honor the basics?
